The indigenous artificial intelligence and big data analytics tool Aster (ASTR) developed in view of cybersecurity, is proving to be a weapon against fraudsters. The Department of Telecom has disconnected more than 82 lakh mobile connections that failed to re-verify Aster AI and were taken in multiple names of the same person. This information has been given by Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development Dr. Pemmasani Chandrasekhar in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha.

According to Minister Chandrasekhar, in the reply given to the Upper House, matters related to cybercrime are under the Ministry of Home Affairs. The Department of Telecommunications is trying to prevent the misuse of telecommunication resources for cyber fraud. The Ministry of Home Affairs has established the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center (I4C) to deal with cyber crimes. So that a framework and ecosystem are available from one place for law enforcement agencies.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has also launched the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal- NCRP (https://cybercrime.gov.in) to enable the public to report all types of cyber crimes. The number of complaints registered on NCRP for 2022, 2023, and 2024 is 10.29 lakh, 15.96 lakh, and 22.68 lakh, respectively.
He has clarified in the reply that the Department of Telecommunications has developed an indigenous AI and Big Data Analytics Tool ASTR, to identify mobile connections taken by the same person in different names. More than 82 lakh such connections have been disconnected through ASTR on failure to re-verify it. Not only this, the Department of Telecommunications has developed a strong "Know Your Customer" (KYC) framework for issuing mobile connections to customers.
How are fake SIM cards issued
The Department of Telecommunications has issued guidelines according to which telecom licensees are required to register their Points of Sale (PoS), which enrol customers and issue SIMs on behalf of the licensees, through biometric verification, physical verification of the address of the place of business and local residence of the PoS. The guidelines also have provisions for online supply chain management of SIM cards, punitive action for violations, including termination of contract and blacklisting of PoS across all telecom service providers (TSPs).
