Mumbai: The Andheri Railway Protection Force (RPF) team of Western Railway's Mumbai Central Division apprehended a mobile phone thief within 24 hours of the crime being reported.
Commuter Loses ₹26,000 Phone at Andheri Station on July 30
The theft occurred on July 30, 2025, at Platform No. 3 of Andheri railway station, where a commuter reported the loss of a mobile phone valued at Rs 26,000. Acting promptly, the special surveillance squad of the Andheri RPF initiated a continuous monitoring operation across the station premises through both CCTV cameras and manual surveillance.
RPF Surveillance Team Tracks and Nabs Suspect Using CCTV and On-Ground Monitoring
Their efforts bore fruit the very next day when a suspicious individual was spotted with the help of CCTV cameras by the vigilant team comprising Head Constable Naveen Kumar and Constables Anuj, Ankit, and Deepak. The suspect was detained at Andheri railway station and brought in for questioning.
47-Year-Old Suspect Confesses to Crime, Handed Over to GRP
During the interrogation, led by RPF Sub-Inspector Anup Kumar, the accused was identified as Mohammad Hussain Kashim Khan, 47, a resident of 507, Gilbert Hill Road, Mohammadi Masjid, Donger, Andheri West. He confessed to committing the mobile theft on July 30.
Following due procedure, the accused was handed over to the Government Railway Police (GRP) at Andheri for further legal action. A case has been registered against him under the relevant sections. Further investigation is underway by the Andheri GRP.
“The incident highlights the effectiveness of the RPF’s surveillance and rapid response efforts in ensuring passenger safety on railway premises,” said an official.
Daily Mobile Theft Cases on the Rise in Mumbai Suburban Trains
Mobile theft has become a major problem in the Mumbai Suburban railway network. On July 29 alone, a total of 34 mobile theft cases were registered with the Mumbai GRP Commissionerate, out of which only 7 cases were detected.
According to sources, more than 20 cases of mobile theft are reported on average every day in the Mumbai Suburban section. According to sources, interstate gangs involved in phone theft and chain snatching are active in Mumbai.

Recently, the Government Railway Police (GRP) busted an interstate gang involved in chain snatching and another gang involved in mobile theft. During the operation, several mobile phones and gold chains were seized from the members of both gangs.
