Narendra Modi Becomes Second-Longest Serving PM In Indian History, Surpasses Indira Gandhi With 4,078-Day Unbroken Stint

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, July 25, will surpass Indira Gandhi to become India's second-highest serving prime minister in an uninterrupted term, completing 4,078 days in office. The milestone will mark a crucial moment in Indian political history, placing Modi just behind Jawaharlal Nehru, who still holds the record for the longest unbroken tenure as prime minister. Nehru reportedly completed 16 years and 286 days in office.

According to a report by PTI, officials suggested that Modi's latest milestone comes after he completes another day in office on July 25, overtaking Gandhi's unbroken term of 4,077 days that lasted from January 24, 1966, to March 24, 1977.

Modi hails from Gujarat's Vadnagar. After taking over as chief minister of Gujarat in 2001, he held the position until 2014, before leading the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to a historic national win.

With victories in the 2014, 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Modi has now equalled Nehru in steering his party to three consecutive general election wins. He is the first and only prime minister to be born after India’s Independence, the longest-serving PM from outside the Congress party, and the longest-serving PM hailing from a non-Hindi-speaking state.

Modi also holds the distinction of being the only non-Congress leader to have completed two full terms and to have been re-elected twice with a clear majority in the Lok Sabha. Notably, he is the first sitting prime minister since Gandhi in 1971 to return to office with a full majority.

Six Straight Wins as Party Leader

Modi’s record as an elected head of government across both state and national levels is unmatched in Indian politics. As per the PTI report, he led the BJP to six consecutive electoral victories, as Gujarat CM in 2002, 2007 and 2012, and as PM in 2014, 2019 and 2024.

"Modi is the only leader in India, among all PMs and CMs, to win six consecutive elections as the leader of a party," a government official told the news agency.
