Penny Lancaster says "he sounded like he was dying" as she revealed an emotional glimpse into her domestic life with Sir Rod Stewart. The 54-year-old Penny marked her 18th wedding anniversary with Rod, 80, earlier this year.
The couple first encountered each other in 1999 before romance flourished between them. Rod ultimately proposed in 2005 during a romantic getaway to Paris. They exchanged vows in 2007 in an opulent ceremony at the medieval monastery La Cervara in Portofino, Italy. The couple are parents to two sons, Alastair and Aiden. Following the birth of their firstborn, Rod chose to name his tour the Alastair Wallace Stewart Tour as performances were arranged around the little one's sleep schedule.
Throughout the tour, Penny reveals she would position Alastair's Moses basket next to the couple's bed. Nevertheless, she admits the infant's colic would "terrify" her.
Penning her experiences in her book Someone Like Me, Penny revealed: "Every afternoon at exactly 4pm he he'd give a shrill scream that sounded as though he was dying.
"In the end the only thing that would calm him was the sound of Rod's Great American Songbook collection gently playing. I can only think that hearing it took Alastair back to the security of the womb, as I'd been in the studio to listen to Rod recording when I'd been pregnant."
According to the NHS, an infant may suffer from colic if they weep for more than three hours daily, three days weekly for a minimum of one week.
It states that babies become more distressed during afternoon and evening hours. A colicky infant might also prove difficult to comfort or calm, clench their fists whilst wailing, turn crimson in the face, and draw their knees towards their stomach or curve their back.
This can begin when they reach three or four weeks of age and continue until three to four months. During a recent chat, Penny revealed that Rod was initially hesitant about expanding their family when they first started their romance.
The Maggie May crooner already had six offspring at that point. Had he stuck to his position, Penny confesses she would have been ready to end the relationship.
Speaking to Saga magazine, she said: "Yes. And that would have been very hard. But we just went with the flow."
Penny disclosed that Rod has since admitted that, if given another opportunity, he would have agreed to more little ones with her much earlier.
She explained: "Now Rod always says, 'I wish I'd said yes [to babies] earlier, because then we could have had more children'.
"Even five years ago, we were talking about adopting, but it ended up not happening. We thought there might be too much of an age gap.
"Actually, I have three because there's another big baby who needs my attention in a different way. I think all women would say that about their husbands."
Sir Rod will be amongst the artists at the Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance 2025, which is being broadcast on BBC One from 9pm.
Also gracing the stage will be Sam Ryder, Keala Settle and Blessing Offor.
