When it comes to the internet, bad actors are out there trying to infect computers with malware. But now there's another, less direct way.
Scammers are also trying to access personal details to gain access to bank details or other information for financial gain, meaning most Brits need to be on their guard. According to a Citizens Advice report last year, one in five people across the UK fell victim to a financial scam.
McAfee has launched a new Scam Detector as part of its Total Protection and LiveSafe, which also protects against viruses and malware. This aims to give users peace of mind while accessing the internet. For those who are a bit confused about how it works or how they can get access to the new antivirus features, here's a rundown of how it works and what shoppers need to know:
McAfee's Scam Detector protects users from text, email, and video scams. It works with email and messaging apps to flag suspicious messages so users know not to click links or take any action.
On certain mobile devices and Windows PCs, Scam Detector can also detect deepfake videos as you watch them. When it comes to email scams, it supports the likes Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo!, MSN, AOL, and Hotmail.
It's also compatible with tons of devices, including PC, Android and iOS, meaning that no matter what devices shoppers use, they'll always be protected from scams. This doesn't include the fact that it comes bundled with McAfee's award-winning antivirus software that helps stop viruses, trojans, malware and worms that might infect users' computers while they're browsing.
Depending on the bundle they choose, shoppers can also get a password manager, VPN and web protection bundled in with McAfee's Total Protection or LiveSafe protection.
McAfee's Scam Protection is bundled with its Total Protection bundle, which currently costs £10.99 at Currys instead of £11.99 for one year for one device. Or shoppers can pay £13.99 for one year for three devices, which can cover phones and PCs across the home. McAfee's LiveSafe protection, which covers every device in the home and includes a virus protector, password manager, Scam Protection, and more for £79.99 a year.
McAfee isn't the only solution that's around to help people stop scams. Norton has Norton Genie, which helps people detect scams. This starts at £19.99 for its basic protection, including a virus scanner and password manager.
There's also Bitdefender Total Security for £49.99 a year. This includes scam protection and virus/malware protection for PCs.`
When it comes to McAfee, there are glowing reviews from users. One shopper said: "McAfee Antivirus is one of the most reliable cybersecurity solutions I've used in recent years. It delivers strong real-time protection against viruses, malware, ransomware, and phishing threats without slowing down system performance."
Another user added: "Been using McAfee for years and love the protection across my devices and digital threats. Keep up the great work!"
However, some users have had some issues. One user noted that they had installation issues. They added: "Every year, it is not the easiest software to install. At least this year, I did not need to contact McAfee for online support, but it still didn't install easily."
However, another happier review added: "McAfee is hands down the best anti-virus solution out there. Love the new Scam Detector feature"
