What is heartburn and its cause as per Ayurveda?
As per Ayurveda, heartburn is majorly linked to an imbalance in the Pitta dosha, which is often associated with the digestive fire (Agni) and metabolic processes. When Pitta is out of balance, it can lead to excessive acidity, causing heartburn and other digestive issues. Here are a few simple Ayurvedic remedies that help in healing heartburn and improve the condition naturally.

Licorice Root (Yashtimadhu)

As per Ayurvedic experts, adding Yashtimadhu or Licorice root to the diet can naturally help in healing acidity. Licorice root is known for its soothing properties, which help to coat the esophagus and stomach lining. This protective layer can reduce irritation caused by stomach acid. A simple way to add this to the diet is by making a tea using dried licorice root, or take it in supplement form as directed.

Ginger (Adrak)

Ginger has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries to aid digestion and reduce nausea. Its anti-inflammatory properties can help soothe an irritated esophagus. A simple way to use ginger for healing acidity, just make a drink or a simple ginger tea by simmering fresh ginger slices in hot water. You can also add a pinch of black pepper to enhance its effects.

Cumin Seeds (Jeera)

Cumin seeds help in balancing stomach acid and improving digestion. They also have carminative properties that can reduce gas and bloating. Chew a teaspoon of roasted cumin seeds or drink cumin seed tea. For added benefit, mix cumin seeds with coriander and fennel seeds.

Fennel Seeds (Saunf)

Fennel seeds can help neutralize stomach acid and reduce heartburn. They also promote better digestion. Just chew a teaspoon of fennel seeds after meals, or brew fennel seed tea for a soothing drink.

Coriander (Dhania)

Coriander seeds can aid in reducing acidity and calming inflammation. Make a coriander seed tea by boiling a teaspoon of seeds in water. Strain and drink this tea after meals.

Triphala

Triphala is a traditional Ayurvedic blend of three fruits: Amalaki, Bibhitaki, and Haritaki. It helps to balance digestive functions and soothe inflammation. Just include Triphala powder to warm water or make a simple tea and drink it before bedtime, to help regulate digestion and reduce acidity.
